DescriptionThese two activities are a useful support task that pupils can complete during their work on the QCA SOW on Changing State (5d).

The application consists of a labelling activity, an animation of the water cycle followed by another labelling activity.

Where appropriate feedback is given to pupil's selections.

ObjectiveUnit 5d Changing State
• that evaporation is when a liquid turns to a gas
• that condensation is when a gas turns to a liquid
• that condensation is the reverse of evaporation

AssessmentMainly through observation and questioning – a printout of the pupils work at various stages can be kept as a record of achievement.

Prior KnowledgePre-requisite knowledge/skills/understanding: Basic mouse control skills, word recognition skills and understanding of vocabulary used.

Expectations• identify the process that takes place when water changes to a gas as evaporation
• identify the process which takes place when water vapour turns to a liquid as condensation

• recognise that melting, freezing, evaporation and condensing are all changes which can be reversed and all changes which involve a change of state
• identify correctly examples of the above changes
• describe the water cycle, naming processes correctly eg by telling the story of a drop of water from when it left the sea until it returned to the sea
• recognise that evaporation and condensation are processes that can be reversed

HintsUnzip all files to the same folder.

MaterialsZIP CStateExe - Self executable version of the changing state activity.

ZIP CStateHtml - A zip file containing the html file and flash file. Make sure you have previously downloaded the Flash player from macromedia.com
